Fragrance oil ingredients :
Fragrance oils in general are made up of a mixture of over 100 natural and synthetic ingredients specifically engineered for varying purposes (e.g., burning oil has a high alcohol content whereas premium quality is designed to be skin safe, and has little to no alcohol content). The exact ingredients as well as manufacturing procedures are considered "trade secrets"-just like perfumes- and are protected by the FDA so we are regretfully unable to go into much detail regarding specifics. However, we can identify the staple ingredients approved by the IFRA, International Fragrance Association, for use in fragrance oil manufacturing. These ingredients consist of; plant-based carrier oils and essential oils; Aldehydes; Esters; and some variation of amines, ethers, ketones, lactones, terpenes and thiones. All our oils are phthalate and DPG free. The above ingredients can be simplified in that fragrance oil manufacturing includes essential oils, aroma chemicals, and aromatic resins. Of these three types of ingredients, there are several layers of ingredients used to create the finished fragrance oil. Due to the amount of engineering involved in designing a scent, it is treated similarly to a commercial recipe in that the exact ingredients and percentages are protected and cannot be disclosed.
How we make our fragrance oils :
Our Fragrance oils are composed of many aromatic ingredients. Many of the common ingredients used in fragrance oils include: carrier base, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, and other synthetic compounds. These ingredients can be derived from nature or created by scientific methods. Natural ingredients include essential oils, resins, and absolutes. Ingredients that are man-made, are also found in nature and can be reproduced synthetically using scientific techniques. The synthetic versions are generally less expensive, more consistent in odor and color, and widely available.
What is IfRA
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) is an international organization that represents fragrance manufacturers. IFRA takes the data and reports from RIFM, evaluates it and publishes guidelines for usage. IFRA will make recommendations for which raw materials are safe to use in fragrance oils; often, what is safe for potpourri will not be safe for the skin. There are over 3500 materials (aroma chemicals, essential oils and essential oil components) that are approved for use in fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are not policed by the FDA; rather, they are a self-regulated body. Each individual ingredient is tested for things such as irritation, solvency, absorption, to physical characteristics like flash point, specific gravity, and flammability as well as more serious things, such as carcinogenic indicators etc… Once an ingredient is fully tested, the results are published in a peer-reviewed journal. A group called ‘RIFM’ performs all the tests (RIFM stands for Research Institute for Fragrance Materials).
